Hungarian Education System

In Hungary the following educational institutions exist:

• nursery
• kindergarten
• primary school or elementary school
• secondary school
• college/ university

Children can attend nurseries from the age of some months, and can go to a kindergarten after the age of three. It is not compulsary in Hungary, but the last year is the so called pre-school course, a school preparatory year before primary education starts.

The elementary education lasts for 8 or 4 years, depending on the type of school, which is followed by a 4 or 8 year- long secondary education.

At primary schools children learn art subjects and science, they learn the basic skills.

Secondary education finishes with a final exam, called „érettségi”.

Lots of young people go to colleges or universities nowadays to get a degree, or diploma.

Those who do not want to study go to vocational schools to get a trade.
